1 Doorways
"There is little magic left in the world...only a select few can still find it, for it lurks simply around the corner. It remains in the hearts of those who chose to remember the time when magic was plentiful. However, this new world has been polluted with theories and science that tried to prove that magic had not and could not exsits. But the truth is, it was magic that was real...it was magic that thrived...and it is magic that now dies..."
From the time David Lancester was a young boy, he had always been interested in doorways; their purpose, where they lead, and how to unlock those which were locked. His mother, Maggie, was a real eastate agent, she took David to all the open houses that buyers had come to see. She would give him an informal tour of all the houses they went to, before the buyers arrived. However, by the time he was four he could easily navigate around any house, thus his mother let him do so alone. 1588 Secquester Drive, the address of this house would be one David would never forget. His mother's light blue mini van pulled into the paved driveway, she slowed to a stop, pulled the keys from the ignition, and finally stepped out. She slid the long door of the mini van to release her restless four year old, David. Once unstrapped, he leaped from the car, then raced to the front door where he waited patiently for her. Maggie smirked as she pulled the house key from her pocket, on the door knob was a bulky black lock. On the lock was a pad with several buttons on it, each with a number beside it from one to nine. His mother inserted the key into the bottom of the lock then typed in a combination of numbers, a low beep sounded, and then she twisted the key; the lock unhooked from the door knob. David had never understood this process, his mother tried to explain it to him many times. It was about eleven o'clock in the morning, Maggie sat at the base of the staircase reviewing her clents infrormation. David was already at the top of the stairs, he searched the house with his eyes, it was much bigger than his own home. The upstairs consitsted of four rooms, his own upstairs had two. This house had three bedrooms, one of which was a master with a large bathroom with a sliding glass shower. He wondered, first, into the master bedroom. The mere sight of the King sized bed made his eyes gleam and his spirit soar, he jumped onto the bed and rested his small body which paled in comparison to the surface area of this collosal bed. The house had been furnished by a nation wide home ect. company, just so the buyers would have a reference on how to place their own furniture. David had rested enough, he quickly made his way in and out of the bathroom and two closets, he set off for another room. He made his way into the second room, which was simply down a hallway and to the left. This room was slightly smaller, on one side of the room there was a mahogony dresser with a flat screen tv on top, on the other side was a Queen sized bed and a mahogony night stand. After David had tested out this bed he made his way to the closet, before him was two large, wooden, white doors in a large square frame. Two golden knobs on each door resided a few inches above his head. He reached up, grabbed both of the knobs, twisted and then pulled the doors open. Inside was three long shelves, one at the top for hanging clothes. He'd seen this all before, however, on the ceiling of the closet was a small door with no knobs. David gazed up at the door with no knobs, he was very interested in it. He looked around, makeing sure no one was watching (Even though he knew only his mother and he were in the house.), then he grabbed the lowest shelf and pulled himself up onto it. He laid flat on the shelf, he listened closely for any creaks in the shelf, hopeing it wouldn't break. Slowly, he stood up and grabbed the next shelf, pulled himself up, laid flat, and again listened for the sounds of the shelf starting to collapse. As before, the shelf remained as strong as the one before it. A long metal bar stretched from one side of the closet to the other, a place to hang clothes. Behind this bar was the last shelf, he stood up and reached as far as he could but could not reach. He even tried using his "tippy toes", but still could not reach. David then decided to jump for the final shelf, success, he grabbed on to the edge of the shelf. He pulled his body all the way up, this time the shelf let out a loud creaking noise. At the base of the stairs Maggie looked up from her clients information, she thought she had heard something. David laid flat on the shelf, the creaking ceased, his mother listened closely then returned to her reading. He had made it, the door without knobs was within his reach. A wide smile was placed on his face, he got to his knees and looked at the door closely. Suddenly, a strange chill, like the first breeze of cold at the end of Fall, came upon him. He shivered for a few seconds, the feeling was gone, he regained his composure and reached for the door. David put both hands on the door, he started to push, something heavy had to be weighing it down. He pushed off his knees and slowly started to stand, the door flung open, a breeze came from the doorway. The shelf started to creak again, he didn't care, his curiosity had bested him. He reached into the doorway, grabbed on to the door and pulled his body into the room. He looked around, nothing. He saw absolutely nothing, no floor and no ceiling, it wasn't a room at all. He stood up on the door, the breeze brushed passed him once more. This breeze was warm and inviting, however, he knew not where it had come from. All around him was black, nothingness. He peered all around, he saw nothing then turned to leave, he stopped as a low hum sounded. A bright light flashed behind his back, he quickly turned. A blinding light resided before his eyes, he held a hand above his eyes to block some of the light. Then, a figure began to establish itself, David could see none of its physical features, just a silouette. The figure held out its hand to David and spoke in a deep and omnipresent voice, "I want you to remember." Blackout, everything faded from David, he fell into nothingness. "David!" His mother repeatedly called out his name. No answer followed. She continued to call his name in the ambulance, and as they entered the hospitle. He never responded. Hours later, Maggie sat in the waiting room of the Caring Hearts hospitle. Her head was buried in her hands, tears leaked from the creases in her fingers and hit the floor. She tapped her right foot repeatedly on the marble floor of the waiting room as she awaited the results from the doctor.
