Okay so I was just reading this thing my friend Echo-Raven posted in his journal (everyone should check out his and his friends stuff on their story The Micros cause they’re really good) and he went into detail about his characters abilities and it was fascinating stuff. And I realized I never did that with Kit and since I have writer’s block, I now have something to do. Go Echo!!! Down to business, *warning there is no way not to avoid spoilers so don’t b***h to me if I do and parts of this is really just random information due to the fact that I have writer's block*
The Source Kit isn’t just a mage, she’s a sorceress. That requires a major back story. Okay, so when god, or whomever, created the universe. He first said “Let there be light” and the light came and illuminated the darkness. And so for one day, the first day there was nothing but the light and the darkness. And they clashed and thus the great and eternal war between good and evil began. So god created an endless amount of worlds and planes for this war to be fought on. And somehow ( I haven’t really figured this part out ) magic sprung up, actually it more like came down, in the form of an ancient mystical object. Within this object there was the Source of Magic. The humans reached out and touched it and learned of magic and how to use it. In their greed for more the object was destroyed. It was shattered into countless pieces. But the knowledge was not lost, people remembered what the object had taught them. And while the source of their power had at first seemed to have been lost forever it was not. The pieces of it floated around and ended up inside a few people occasionally. Kit has one of these pieces, an actual source of magic within her. Other magicals can tap into this and every character you meet other than the Seven Cs, draw their power from her. People with these shards of the object within them are called Sorcerers and Sorceresses and they are quite rare and extremely powerful.
Blood & Heart I often refer to certain magicals by a special term - MBC, Magically Born Children. That usually means that they come from a magical family. This implies that that the ability to use magic has something to do with genetics and that it might even be within magicals’ DNA. But then how do random magicals pop up in very mortal families, which is the majority of them. Kit once explains it to a teammate this way: “Every single person has the words of magic inscribed in their hearts but very few of them ever learn to read them.” This is a very cool quote in a lot of ways. I say that blood is a life force, that’s why vampire need to drink it in order to survive. I’ll phrase it this way the magic is in the blood the ability to use lies in the heart. That is why the more unstable your emotions are the more unstable your spells will become. It also means the stronger you feel the stronger your spells will be. It is very paradoxical because it is almost impossible to control a heart for it is so powerful and it rarely bends to anything and never even obeys the mind. You also need a well-trained mind to use it correctly.
The Karen Family Kit is the princess of Zegwar. The world of Zegwar has always been ruled by the Karen Line, which houses the most powerful magic on the planet. They get more powerful with each generation as their magic seems to have a powerful ability to build up on itself. It works a little differently. Their power lies in the past. And they get stronger because they draw some of their power from their ancestors. In that case of Kit her line includes all of the heroes from the other tales of Zegwar and assorted villains. Powerful magic has always been apart of this family. They haven’t always been pure good, in fact their most notable members have been either corrupt or extremely screwed up. But despite that they’ve always been their leaders because for every psychopath that tries to kill them there are about twenty fairly decent leader and two really great ones.
The Elements The Elements are a very important theme. Each character in the Tales of Zegwar is tied to one of my elements. That means that the source of magic that they draw their power from is the same thing that gave birth to their Kinwas, their transformed states that they use to fight the forces of darkness. I never say much about this particular source but it’s kind of hidden in certain scene that the source that created these mysterious powers is the very same one that dwells within Kit. It’s never said how it ended up in her, I don’t really know myself. But she’s always been the leader and so it belongs to her.
Life Line’s Effect Kit is also what is called an Avarsis. It is someone who is born for the sole purpose of dying so that the world may live and continue to grow. I state quite clearly that very few magicals lie past six years on the job. Kit is one of the few who do, even her talented brother, Richard, didn’t make it past the six year mark. Kit’s teachings later moves the line from six years to ten. Before that if you didn’t make it to that mark your life force had to go somewhere. It isn’t something that can just dissipate it tends to end up in some other poor magical to increase their life span. That’s how Kit was able to live long enough to die at the predestined moment. Sadly for her she gained her extra years from the Minor Avarsi, all of whom she cared deeply for.
Balance One of my major themes is balance. There is a war waging between the forces of light and darkness, there always had been. But Kit’s power lies not in the light but in the balance between the light and the darkness. She may fight for the side of good but whenever she tries to act as though she is only one of them chaos inevitably ensues. And there were times throughout her life when she tried to choose between them and she didn’t always choose the light. In fact she’s so deeply tied into the elements of light and darkness that she has a personality dedicated to each of them. Her white-haired personality is a pure light, it can’t stand anything that isn’t as pure as it and so it kills. The Nothingness is her dark side, which is actually more human and less terrifying when encountered directly. But it actually did a lot more damage, it’s just not as openly insane. Whenever she's off her balance her power is weakened.
Enchantments This is a really interesting actually. When Kit was born her power so great that her body couldn’t handle it. So they split her in half and created Kit and Mark. To prevent her from completely unraveling that placed upon her many enchantments. The first was a seal to lock away her other personalities, which soon broke when she discovered her magic. The second was a binding spell which was intended to contain her magic until she could handle it but at the tender age of four when her life was put in jeopardy it shattered and her powers were returned. The third spell was a protection spell, which seems to mutate the more she grows. As a child it prevented healing spells from affecting her but just healed herself. It also prevents self-mutilation as she later discovers.
