One minute after apocalypse
two million brightly colored plastic morsels
floated in the grimy urban tarn
pouring in lazy sheets from the razor-edged
balustrades, collecting by the curbside at the end
of the street in impressive superstore piles
One minute after apocalypse
I saw Innana lying there under the
shaded portico having fallen asleep
reading James Joyce's "Ulysses"
and sipping a drink of her own devising
with two insubstantial ice cubes to
stave off the desultory sirocco
One minute after apocalypse
The sturdy elm that we planted in the
yard not expecting it to survive
two summers bent its branches toward
the bright reflections in the rippling
newborn watercourse and blanched
to discover such a very subtle poison
