Fear: n : a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid. Synonyms: anxiety, discomposure, panic, reverence, suspicion, and terror. All emotions boil down to 2 feelings, the root of everything we do comes out of love and fear. Fear, such a powerful concept and its something that is inevitable. One of the major causes of fear is sudden change; an idea so complex and so simple is terrifying to the majority of the human population. The United States are facing great change, and the people of our country are panic-stricken. What is this change you ask? Millions of people are fleeing to the U.S. from all over South America. Our country’s first response was to put up a wall, a border between Mexico and the United States, but according to Opposing View Points Series: Does Illegal Immigration Harm America? , more than 4.8 million immigrants have entered our country illegally in the past eight years. The truth is, American citizens are scared.

What’s so scary about more people in our country? We want to expand right? Wrong. With our country’s economy facing recession, over 4.4 million jobs have been lost (according to MSNBC, a popular news station). One of America’s biggest problems right now is our economy crashing; citizen’s are losing their jobs, and can’t find new jobs because illegal immigrants will work for lower wages. Money, money, money. The fight against illegal immigration has cost millions. One thing that Border Patrol agent Jim Stout said is that one gadget that detects radiation costs nine thousand dollars, and each agent gets one. That’s just one toy. What about the hundreds of thousands of agents that get that toy? Our country is losing billions of dollars, and it’s starting to look to the U.S. that it could be a cause of illegal immigrants. When someone panics, they do anything and everything to solve the problem, even if it’s only temporary. What happens when a whole country panics? Fear is the basis of the immigration issue. Our country is afraid, afraid of war, drugs, violence, and losing money.

Lets face it, we’re all scared, and those of us who aren’t scared have no idea what’s going on. Some of the biggest anti-immigration laws and groups are the most visible outcome of our fear. Minutemen are alarmed; they spend hours and hours trying to stop immigration, all out of fear. Our country is intimidated; it’s spent millions of dollars to keep immigrants out. Personally, I’m not afraid of immigration, but I’m afraid of the possible failure of this country in result of it. It’s becoming quite obvious that our country is on the brink of panic. We’ve put up walls and enforced laws all because no one really knows what to do. I’m afraid of the future of this country, of the millions of dollars lost, of the possibility of civil war, of the possibility that my friends and family could lose their jobs, homes, and lives at any moment. What do we do when our country doesn’t feel safe? And most importantly, where is the line between having fear and being selfish?
