Slowly, I reached for the letter, looking toward Nick with slight anticipation showing on my face. Every inch seemed to take a decade until I finally had it between my fingers. Again, I look over at Nick and he nods his head, communicating to me that it was alright to open it. Slowly, I ripped the envelope off, revealing the crude piece of paper that contained my future. Carefully, I unfold the paper and see…

Everyone rushes out of the classroom, talking amongst themselves about what their next classes were and which lunch they had with who. Such a typical first day of high school, not that I particularly cared, for I only read my book for every class period.
“Hey, Allz, what class do you have next hour?”
I turn around to see my friend Jenna staring intently upon me.
“FOS. Miller.” I replied. Talking has never been my strong point.
“Ah, really? I have him as well! Lets walk over together!” Jenna then smiled and started walking. Complaining wasn’t my nature so I followed along quietly, listening half heartedly to her stories of the past summer, as well as the latest breakups and rumors. Yet another topic that I epically failed at.
We had finally reached the side stairs that lead to the science wing. I just had to survive the walk downstairs to the first room on the right and I could sit down and continue reading my book. With that thought in mind, we started descending the stairs. On the second step down, a senior brushed past up, knocking into my shoulder. In desperation, I reached for the railing to steady myself, but missed completely. I was sliding down all 20 steps in front of numerous people.
At the bottom, Jenna helped me to my feet and we walked quickly to class, completely silent, trying to tone out the laughs of the people who say me fall.
The rest of the school day went by normal enough. Well, until I complained that evening to my mom about my arm hurting. After getting an x-ray, we found out that I had actually broken my arm. The next day, I told everyone who asked that I had played football with my brother and his friends and got tackled, but everyone knew; I could thank the rumor mill for that.
Looking back, one can see how simplistic this accident was, but because of it, I had people laughing at me even more that the time I caught a frozen pizza on fire or when I burned my whole right hand from grabbing a hot curling iron. As for an embarrassing moment, it wasn’t bad, but if you are like me you don’t want extra attention drawn to you the first day of high school freshman year.
Though I must say, I have this incident to thank for becoming more social and even the class Vice President.
