"I'll see you tomorrow, okay?" Zach whispers, his fingers running along the fiery red locks of hair made special for his girlfriend's wig. She had been suffering from leukemia for the last three years, now it had spread, both to her lungs and her brain. His icy blue eyes locked with her beautiful jade hues as he spoke, she nodded simply and smiled back at him. "I love you," he added.
"I love you, too, so much." Amelia replied, he pressed a soft kiss to her cheek through the mask he had to wear to protect her from any possible infection. Finally, she let go of his hand and smiled faintly as he walked out the door, just before the nurse came back to tell him to leave for the evening. No matter what, every time Zach heard those words his heart fluttered with joy because he knew how much she meant them when she would say such a thing.
At noon the next day, Zach made his way through the halls of the hospital up to room 307, where his girlfriend was staying in the extended-care wing. However, when he got there, neither she nor her mother or father were in sight. "Where's Amelia?" Zach questioned, looking around as he took another sip of his Coca-Cola, while watching the nurse fold up the bedding in the process of changing it out. She gave him a concerned look as she stopped briefly. "My girlfriend...where is she?" He added.
Sighing softly, the young nurse turned to face him and her look changed from worried to sad.
"Sweetheart she...passed away late last night," The nurse replied, that was when Zach realized he hadn't checked his phone that morning. His ocean blue eyes widened as he looked around the room, he couldn't believe that she was gone, and he didn't even get to say good bye. His heart raced, beating heavily against his ribs as he took in the info.
"She...she can't be I just saw her last night. I just saw her. She was fine," He stammered, his eyes filling with tears. "They're playing a prank, right? You're kidding around. Tell her to come out from the bathroom. This isn't funny," he added, the nurse simply shook her head 'no' then walked out of the room as she left him there alone.
Zach pulled out his phone and turned it on, seeing there was a voice mail left from Amelia's mother. As he played the voice mail, her mother explained what happened and he walked over to Amelia's bed to sit down. She coded at one o'clock the night before and they couldn't revive her. They did all they could but they couldn't save her. The seventeen year old's heart sank in his chest, his eyes filling with tears, as he began to break down. He had been so strong before now. He was sure she would some how beat this cancer and live a healthy life after.
But he was wrong and now... she was gone.
