• PROLOGUE

    Um... hi...

    This is Asa Prong: The names of my friends are Mai Frock, Phoebe Mason, Aria Finale, Spencer Finale, and Ike Parker. We live in Crowns, New York, and had a relatively normal existence. But before you read this account of our story, you should know something about us:
    We’re shape shifters. We can change ourselves into virtually everything with a heartbeat, but we need to fully transform. Otherwise bad things happen. A pretty big population of us used to live here, in Crowns; 6,872 shifters, to be exact. Just last year, that number dropped down to six. Us six. We’re the last of our kind.

    Mai here: before you get all sad, there’s something I should say. We’re fine with being an endangered species. In fact, we were nearly wiped out by our own kind and yours. But you’ll hear more about that in the story, if you choose to read it and utterly change the way you see the world. If I were you, though, I would think hard. Do you really want to go through with this?

    It’s Phoebe: I would totally read this if I were you. Just ignore Mai. We suffered because of you and your kind, and we deserve to be heard. And now, because of what you did to our people, Aria

    Ike: That’s enough, Phoebe. Aria doesn’t need you to flaunt her name around like she’s Jesus Christ, so shut the hell up.

    This is Spencer: It’s okay, Ike. My sister’s okay. Phoebe, you did go a little far, but Aria’s fine, and that’s all that matters. For you readers who should seriously close this book right now (Not kidding), Aria’s my twin. We’re nothing alike though; she got the looks and I got the brains. Phoebe, stop throwing Aria’s name out, okay? If these people want to know what happened to us, to her, they should read this.

    Mai again: Really, Spence? Really?

    It’s Asa again: Everyone shut up! I’m doing the prologue! Okay, good. Don’t stare at me like that, Pheebs, it ruins your complexion. As I was saying before Mai cut in and started a war, we’re an endangered species. Your kind did unspeakable things to ours, and if you really want to find out, then you’ll continue. For those of you who are slightly smarter, you’ll stop your journey here and save yourself.
