Morning came and the townspeople were out walking around. Street vendors were also out making business with everyone passing by. It was noisy and lively, just like any other day. But Night was feeling a bit off.
“Hey, watch it!” a man that Night bumped into yells.
“Sorry, man” Night apologizes halfheartedly.
He continues walking down the street with his hands in his pocket. When he walked, he looked down in deep thought. The things that happened last night were still fresh in his mind. All these years of hiding, everyone should have given up or died. No one should live this long still looking for him.
The fountain was just ahead. The same place he saw the old book vendor. What was his name? He never told Night who he was. People sat on benches and ledge of the stone that held all the water in. No one looked at Night as he passed by.
The road stretched for a long time and Night was walking for a good three hours. Nothing would faze him now. It was a trance that he couldn’t get out of. Without knowing it, he went in compete circles and ended up on the vendors street. Maybe deep inside, he really wanted to come here.
Night tried to pass by without looking at anyone, but then someone pushed him and he crashed into a vendor, breaking the stand. Whoever pushed him was long gone. Probably the goons that he fought last night.
“Look what you did!” a girl shouts.
Night looks up and sees a young teen, fuming with anger. He sees all the books scattered about and realized he crashed into a young book vendor.
“It wasn’t me—”
“I don’t care who it was but you were the one that fell on my stand!” she held up a fist, serious about it. “I’m going to ruin your life”
“My life’s already ruined” Night whispers to himself then says the to girl, “What are you going to do to me, huh?”
“I’m going to make you fix this—drat, the books are all ruined…hey, your sitting on one! GET UP!”
He got up quick and got a full view on the damage he’d done. The stand was made of wood and it was broken in two. Books were ripped and scratched as they fell onto the stoned street.
“No ones going to buy this now…” she whines.
“No ones been buying it”
“What was that?!” this girl was bi-polar.
“Nothing!” Night sighs and says, “Can I just go now?”
There was real anger in the girl. She stood up straighter, arms crossed, and said with a demanding voice, “No. Today you will be my underling until you’ve got everything fixed. You will follow my every command and finish all tasks without fail, got that? If not, I will call the authorities to hunt you down”
Night was never the type to listen to people, but this girl was a little strange. He looks around and sighs. All he’s been doing was walking and thinking, maybe its about time he’s done something useful. Plus it would get his mind off of last night.
“…Ok…” he says.
She smiles. “Good. My name’s Mika” she holds out her hand. “What’s yours?”
“N—” he hesitated. Someone in this town knows who he is, so giving another person his name wouldn’t be a smart idea.
“N…what?” Mika stares, a bit lost.
“My name’s Neij” Night says, then curses in his mind. That was one of his names in his past identities, his past lives. Then Mika says something that made him regret agreeing to help.
“Neij? That’s a great name! It’s from the story my grandpa told me, The boy with a Thousand Names. Neij was a knight, you know.”
