The black leather wagon rolled over a cobble-stone bridge. The young girl, no more than thirteen, listened intently to the rushing of the river below.
"Alex, Jessica? Why don't you practice your spelling words?" Lydia asked her twin children. They were almost seven now. Suddenly, George pulled up hard on the ropes. The horses nieghed, a large flash of black leather with white wood for some, for others, a shake, a bang, and cold water splashing in thier face.
"Kalla!" Lydia screamed. Alex and Jessica screamed in pain, a large chunk of white wood crushed them to the seat. George threw himself over Lydia, but all was lost. Lydia had horrible asthma, and now that the other wagon's wheel lay on George's back, it crushed her lungs just as well as his.
Then Kalla woke up. Alexis and Tyler walked over to the sink and splashed water on thier faces. Kalla quickly got cleaned up. She felt around her closet for her black, turtle neck wool sweater, and a pair of black jeans. She always wore black and gray checkered tennis shoes, and her long, straight black hair was streeked with a pale brown. She had glazey-green eyes.
"Kalla! We have a new kid today." Tyler grabbed her hand and led Kalla down the stairs to the big, stain glass doors of Ol' St. Kliee Orphanage. A young boy, prehaps fourteen or fiveteen, walked through the door. He had lovely, smokey blue eyes, and a dirty blonde mop of curls on his head. Almost shoulder length. He wore a gray t-shirt (rather tight if you asked Alexis) and semi-baggy black jeans. He was very fit, almost buff, and had black tennis shoes on. He smiled.
"Children, this is Matt. His parents died in a car crash about a month ago." as Miss Charlene said this, Kalla stopped, gasped, and practicly collapsed on the step below.
"Kalla!" her mother's voice echoed in her head.
"Oh, I forgot! Matt, this is Kalla. She went through a horrible experience. Her brother, sister, and parents drowned when a white wagon rolled onto the bridge and it collapsed. She just needs some time alone. Anyway, umm... free period I guess." Miss Charlene shrugged, exasperated. Matt sat down next to Kalla on the steps. Her silver, star shaped locket hung on her neck. Inside, a picture of her family together, and then a picture of her grandparents. Tyler ran up to Matt.
"Oh, Matt!" he dropped his voice to a whisper. "Kalla's blind." Matt nodded and turned to Kalla.
