I ran, stumbled, pushed my way through the forest.
No. This is not happening. This can't be happening.
I reached a meadow. The meadow. The meadow where my mom discovered her powers. I looked up at the sky, tears streaming down my face. The sky was a bright blue, but it was becoming cloudy and smelled like rain. It was as if some greater power knew what had happened.
I looked back at the meadow, saw the gently swaying knee high grass, felt a light breeze. Wildflowers of all kinds were sprayed everywhere. The meadow was not big, rather small, but it felt so comforting. The stream over to the left gurgled quietly.
I let out a small cry, ran toward the middle, collapsed, and let my body just lie there. The news my father had given swam in front of my eyes.
"Mara, I hate to tell you this," I saw my father's sad, sad face. "but your mother. . .your mother was in a plane crash." I balled my hand into a fist; my face buried in the sweet smelling grass. Mom had been in Chicago for a business trip. I saw my face, shocked and worried. "Is - is she. . ."
"Yes. I'm so sorry, honey."
I sat up and wiped my tears. Mom wouldn't want me to cry. I smiled weakly to myself. She had only liked happy tears.
I pictured mom, her light blonde hair shoulder length, her pretty, constantly smiling face telling you everything was going to be alright. A smile I would never see again.
I sat up and pushed that thought out of my head. Using my telepathic powers, I picked a wildflower from across the meadow and brought it to my waiting fingers. I stared at it for a minute, my brain containing no thought; just lost in space.
Something dripped onto one of the petals of the flower, startling me. I wasn't crying. I looked up at the sky. It had started to rain.
I put a small shield of power around me, blocking the rain before it had started fully coming down.
"Mara?" I looked up, immediately taking down the shield. No one was to know about my powers. The only other person who had known was mom.
It was Zeke. I felt my heart skip a beat.
"Zeke. . . what are you doing here?"
"I heard about. . ."
"Oh."
He jogged over to me, and I could feel the tears coming. I fell into Zeke's arms, tears trickling down my cheeks. His arms were wrapped around me, protecting me from the world.
"Mara. . . I. . .I love you. I'm here for you." Zeke said. I could tell he truly, deeply meant it. I hugged him even harder.
"I love you too, Zeke." His arms tightened around me, pulling me closer. I looked up into his eyes; bright green and full of warmth. His black hair was a little messed up, but I didn't care.
Our faces were close, then closer, and then we were kissing.
As soon as our lips touched, lightning flashed, thunder rumbled, and rain came pouring down.
